What to look for when choosing a forex broker in Italy

When choosing an Italy forex broker, the local firms are not that plentiful. The binary options scandal a few years back took advantage of a multitude of Italian citizens, and due to the impact of this fraudulent activity, the local regulator, CONSOB (Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa), came down hard on the brokerage community, forcing many firms to relocate elsewhere.

Our list of the best brokers includes many of the finest firms from the European region. Choose one that offers the assets you wish to trade in the way that you wish to trade them, based on the following criteria:

  • Fees and commissions: Whether you trade forex with CFDs or traditional methods, the spread will be your primary cost factor. Brokers will typically post their average spreads for popular currency pairs such as the ‘EUR/USD’ and the ‘EUR/GBP’. Brokers that offer multiple accounts will also tend to offer better spreads for higher initial deposits. Compare your brokers based on your intended account balance amount for competitiveness.
  • Regulation – are they safe? The safest route to secure trading, free from the possibility of fraud, will always be to choose a regulated broker, preferably one licensed by a top-tier agency such as the FCA in the UK.
  • Forex trading platform: You will want to feel comfortable when executing buy and sell orders on your chosen trading platform. MetaTrader 4 (MT4) is the most popular trading platform in the industry, but many large brokers have proprietary systems that may have more features. Each broker’s demo system offers the best way to test if its software performs to your liking.
  • Customer service: Support is important. You will want quick and competent responses to your queries, especially if you are a beginner. Live chat is usually the quickest, but direct phone lines and emails might suffice. Check them out before choosing your broker.

FAQs:

Is forex trading legal in Italy?

Forex trading is legal in Italy. The local regulator, Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la Borsa, requires that acceptable forex brokers must be licensed by it or by another authorizing body within the European Economic Area (EEA). Italian traders should also be aware that all forex brokers who accept Italian traders are not necessarily licensed or regulated.

Do forex traders pay tax in Italy?

Tax rates are steep in Italy – there is not only a federal income tax, but also a regional, communal and social security tax. In some cases, a wealth tax may also apply. There may also be limits and brackets to consider, but forex income is taxed as if it were ordinary income. Check with a professional tax advisor to determine how these various Italian taxes apply to your personal situation.
